I recently came back in touch with a life long friend i have known since kindergarten. We lost touch in the middle school and high school as we both developed different interests. Its been since 1999 and hadn't seen John for many years. I knew he had came home a few times from overseas fighting for our country and I knew where he was but I didn't go see him. "Come have a drink John VanScoyk is here!" Nah, i replied. We grew apart he doesn't want to see me.
So almost 2 years ago in October John was in town for his family to meet his girlfriend Patti who he met while being enlisted and they ventured to Indiana from North Carolina to visit old friends and to see family. While visiting I got a call about my photography. It was John wanting to do pictures. "Hell yeah lets rock some photos!" i said with tons of enthusiasm. I couldn't be more excited to do someones photos. As i was just starting out i wasn't completely confident in my work yet but working with a life long friend, the new love of his life, and the pure raw emotion emanating from these two made my job so easy.
They were so in love! I remember a few times under the willow tree i had to pry them apart. "I asked for a good emotional kiss! Don't make me get out the hose!" I said to pry these two love birds apart. I knew from that moment these two were destined for one another. It was a perfect day and the images turned out great. On a even more plus side I reconnected with one of the best friends i have ever had.
Over the next year we stayed in contact sharing old stories and my wife and I went with John and Patti to celebrate Johnno's birthday in Chicago with them which was a huge shock. We couldn't believe we were asked to share this special weekend with them.
We had a nice dinner at a little hidden Italian restaurant downtown Chicago, went for a horse drawn carriage ride (it was closed because of the parade) took some photos and walked around downtown and froze our rears off. It was one of the best weekends we had ever had.
Fast forward a little bit and here we are. The island of Hatteras North Carolina where John and Patti join hands and speak their vows forever bonding them as husband and wife.
John and Patti rented this beautiful home right on the beach for the wedding party and family. Graciously they offered for us to stay there as well. Myself, my wife and our daughter Kaitlyn flew out for the whole week. We gained a lot of new family that week. Everyone welcomed us as family members and we couldn't have asked to be around a more nice group of people. It made my job that much easier to capture some truly awesome images for them.
I even planned for my wife and I to be remarried on the beach as a surprise for her. We never had a proper wedding so while we were there, why not?! Patti was awesome enough to read our nuptials for us on the beach.
Now onto the wedding. May 4th 2012 (Star wars day ;)
We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. Nice 80-85 degree weather. Nice breeze on the sand and surf. Friends and family out to share this awesome day on the beach. Absolutely beautiful.
Patti approached the beach down a long pier towards the ocean while groomsman Aaron Hargett played Somewhere over the rainbow on the ukulele.
Johnno and Pattis mom greeted Patti at the circle of family and friends where they exchange their vows becoming husband and wife read by one of Pattis good friends as the Reverend got her times mixed up and was very late so we proceeded without her. Heather did a great job reading the vows for John and Patti.
Friends and family then approached the shores of the ocean for a blessing of throwing seashells into the ocean.
Each of our guest have been given a shell
To hold, bless and protect
Jonathan and Patti ask that in your mind and heart
You pray that their marriage be blessed.
Come cast our stones into the sea, and as the ripples
Touch and intertwine with one another,
May our love also touch and intertwine
To spread love and good wishes to all around us!
May God bless us all!
Time for the party!!!!
